MMmega00/01/02 Minimodule for Atmel microcontrollers
ATmega128(L)/64(L).

Terminal layout | ISP ConnectorTechnical Data | Buy MMmega0X

ATmega128(L) ia a example of efficient Atmel's 8 bit AVR microcontroller. This microcontroller is available in the TQFP64 package which is difficult to use in prototype and amateur circuits due to the compactness of terminals. We have undertaken an attempt at placing it on a board of 39x42 mm with a layout of terminals which matches the commonly available prototype circuit boards. In addition, we have included a real-time clock with battery back-up, a serial DataFlash memory with a capacity of up to 32 Mb, a circuit monitoring the supply voltage and an ISP (In-System Programming) connector.

This minimodule is not only an adapter but a complete main board for ATmega128(L). It needs only a connection to the supply voltage and to the ISP connector and we can start loading 128 kbytes of flash memory of the microcontroller.

The choice of our Minimodule is a first step for projects, which must be finished in short time. Through integration of the peripherals with the microcontrollers on one board, the application of this module can lead to a shorter design period and facilitate the construction of systems based on ATmega microcontrollers, by eliminating the need to design the printed board. The module is supplied with software for communication with the in-built peripherals.

MMmega02

Terminal layout

All terminals of ATmega128(L) are accessible through two pin connectors with 0,1" pitch. Such a solution allows a future expansion of the module eg. by a RAM memory and LCD minimodule. Newly introduced have also been: back-up voltage (VBAT), which can be either an input or output, DataFlash and RTC memory choice lines and interrupt output from RTC circuit.

A block diagram of minimodule MMmega02 is presented on the image below:

The path layout was designed with great care. Special attention has been given to extracting the analog and digital parts of the minimodule, this is why masses AGND and GND were seperated, which should be concentrated in one point of the board. The free space was filled with the GND field, which is especially important in case of using the new ATmega128(L) microcontroller, which can be clocked with frequency up to 16MHz.

Minimodules MMmega are available in three basic versions with ATmega128(L):

  • MMmega00 - ATmega128, 14.7456Mhz, quartz crystal 32.768kHz, zasilanie 5V DC.
  • MMmega01 - ATmega128, 14.7456Mhz, DataFlash 4Mb, RTC I2C PCF8583, lithium battery socket, quartz crystal 32.768kHz, supply voltage 5V DC.
  • MMmega02 - ATmega128, 14.7456Mhz, DataFlash 4Mb, RTC SPI DS1305, lithium battery socket, quartz crystal 32.768kHz, supply voltage 5V DC

An own configuration is also possible according to the selector.

ISP connector

MMmega has a ISP connector (2x5 leads), which allows a 100% programming in the system. To seperate the internal circuits connected to the SPI bus, the built-in multiplexer switches the SPI lines while programming.  The programming mode is signalized with the LED diode.

MMmega & ISPcable I

Which programmer to use?

  • ISPcable III is an In-System Programer for Atmel AVR microcontrollers. The programmer connects to a PC through a USB interface and draws the necessary power from the computer eliminating the need for an additional power supply. Can co-operate with microcontrollers supplied with voltages from 1.5V to 6V. Thanks to STK500 compatibility it works witch Atmel AVRStudio and open source software like AVRDUDE.

  • The ISP connector allows also to attach any other programmer compatible with STK200/300/500 produced by Atmel.
